Quantitative Research

Quantitative Research is getting data based on numbers and  statistics. They are usually presented by amounts, or measures of things, and anything under a numeric value.

They are useful for getting information from a large amount of people in a quick time, and get general numbers and statistics. They aren't useful for getting details, and anything specific about the data. 

When creating a TV show, Quantitative research is very useful because you can quickly find facts and figures to find out what types of TV shows worked well for the majority, and what types weren't, and you can learn from these without having to go through hundreds of reviews.

Examples of Quantitative research are  ratings, figures, success rates, likes or dislikes, box office figures, and surveys.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative Research is when you get data based on opinion and detail. These are usually presented via essays and comments.

They are useful for getting very specific and detailed information, and give you information that you couldn't get from a simple survey.

They aren't useful for getting a lot of information, and you would end up getting information from fewer people in a longer time period.

When creating a TV show, Qualitative research is very useful because you can go in and find the specific details as to how one thing was so successful, and what makes it better than/ stand out from others, and vice versa.

Examples of Qualitative research are  reviews, interviews, the news, comments, conversations, and most articles.

Types of Research

Primary

Primary research is research that you made and gathered yourself; data that you collected. The data in that research is usually brand new. It is most useful when you are working with new topics, and to double check if any secondary research is still relevant to the time period that you are in.

Examples include interviews, surveys, evidence from trips that you took, experiments, analysis, and reports.

Secondary

Secondary research is when you use  research that was gathered by someone else. This form of research is easier to gather, and you use up less time.

Examples are getting information from the internet, reports, and studies, asking professionals, and newspapers, reviews (example, The Shape of Water), and box office ratings (example,"The Mummy.")

 

In the sense of making a TV show, you can look at previous statistics and show views, so you can have a better idea of what to do, and what not to do.

Research Organisation

Research organisations is a form of Secondary Research, where you can pay third party companies to do research for you. While this form of research is really easily accessible, and saves you on time and work, it is also very expensive.

Examples include  Quintiles, that researches in science and healthcare, Barb, which gathers and compiles different television ratings and audiences, and Rajar, which measures tv ratings and audiences specifically in the UK.

Purposes of Research 

Target Audiences

When you research for a target audience, you are looking for a group of people who are most likely to buy your product/watch your media. This includes looking for the proper demographic, psychographics (personality), and geographics. 

Demographics are basically anything around appearance and biology, such as age, race, gender. Psychographics have to do with the personality and the opinions of the groups of people, and geographics are based on the place where you live.

Researching a target audience is useful and important because you can get a clearer idea on who you are aiming your show at, and what you need to do/when you need to air the show/how you word everything to target that specific group of people.

Market Trends

Marketing research is when you research information about the preferences of your target audience. Looking up market trends helps you find out what is popular, for your target audience, at that exact moment.

Marketing trends are useful because you can easily find out what your audience is most likely going to be into, and find a good way to communicate with your target audience, and use that information to beat out competition with others.

Production Media

Looking up production media is important if you want to stay on top of your finances. Looking up production media means you need to research the number of equipment, staff, the locations, a risk assesment, storyboarding, ect. 

While this is extremely time consuming, this is useful because looking this stuff up makes it easier for you to have a plan and schedule, and it prepares you for everything, and helps you with production costs.
