Task Three

resubmission in italics

For the remarketing, I decided to remarket the film to the 1960s.

In America, the place this film was made in, people who were gay or bisexual used to be depicted as either sadists, psychopaths, or villains in general. However, this all changed during the 1950s-60s, when people didn’t have to check up with religious groups and the Hollywood Production code to get a box office success, so they just ignored it all together, and started to use less subtext. This was a big step forward. However, any homosexual characters in films were usually hostile misfits who would enact violence on others, or themselves. Aside from a few stand out films, most homosexual characters that weren’t this were either in foreign films, still put in subtext and innuendos.

I first decided to change my context of Moonlight, from two boys with a relationship that leans on romance, to two friends who go on a survive through life together. Essentially, I was turning Moonlight into a buddy film.

"The buddy film is a film genre in which two (or on occasion, more than two) people—often both men—are put together. The two often contrast in personality, which creates a different dynamic onscreen than a pairing of two people of the opposite gender."

I chose this genre because both Chiron and Kevin can fit into a Buddy film pretty seamlessly. Like traditional buddy films, Chiron and Kevin both contrast in personality; Chiron is more gentle, and Kevin is more outgoing. With this information, I could take their personalities and put it into more of a stereotypical sense. Chiron becoming the introverted loser who has never taken a step outdoors, and Kevin becoming the party loving "bro". I've taken the bully, Terrel, and turned him into more of a stereotypical high school bully, whom tormented the both of them. The only thing that was missing from this trailer was a love interest, which wasn't added in due to a lack of scenes with women in them.

When you look at the original poster, you can immediately tell that it's a modern poster, due to the general quality of the image, and the overall dramatic feeling. My first decision was to change the poster to fit the timeframe that i'm changing the setting to, the 1960s Furthermore, I had a whole different genre all together, a buddy film, which shouldn't have just Chiron in the focus, since Kevin is also now a main character.

I started off by researching movie posters and what they looked like in the 1960s. Movie posters at the time were created traditionally- either painted or printed onto the page, since digitally made posters weren't made until the 1990s.

The poster was created in photoshop. I tried my best to create the same feel that many of the posters did in the time period that I was trying to replicate.

The borders around the two images were inspired by the movie "My dog, Buddy", where they have one image bordered with all the information around  it.

I put a large tagline on the top, which is something

that was very common during that time period. I

also tried to make the image look drawn by

saturating the image and adding several filters to

make the image seem like it was screen printed

or painted onto paper, which was how movie posters

were made back in the day.

Trailer

After I finished my poster, I moved on to my trailer. I edited the clips to run fast paced, as to the gradual and slow movement of the actual trailer, I added big and bold text to the trailer, which is a common trait of a stereotypical action film

I changed a few scenes for the trailer, to make it seem more like something of a buddy film. I sped up some scenes to make them run faster, so that they would fit with the pacing of the music, and also to make the movie seem a lot more action packed.

I edited the context of a few scenes. One with the fight between Chiron and Kevin, and a few scenes where Chiron and Kevin were showing signs of a romantic relationship. I edited Terrel in the two scenes that he has to make him look like the main villain of the movie, that Chiron and Kevin have to overcome together. I did this by editing the scenes to make them look like instead of getting Kevin to punch Chiron, it looked like Terrel was having a standoff against Kevin.

The original trailer fits the themes of the movie by using music from it's original soundtrack, to match the tone. In my trailer, I changed the music to a rock song, so it would fit the themes here. The track chosen was inspired by other buddy films, such as Thelma and Louise, Running Scared, and Rush Hour.

Due to the time that I'm setting this film in, I also censored a lot of moments where Chiron and Kevin looked like they had a relationship that ever went beyond friends. I cut out parts of scenes to make them look like they came from two different places, and also kept some scenes out from the trailer entirely.

I decided to cut out all scenes that weren't related to Kevin and Chiron's relationship, as they wouldn't be the main focus point of the trailer, and they didn't really adhere to the buddy movie format.

This second poster was also created in photoshop, right after I finished making my trailer. Unlike the last poster, in which I looked at 1960s movie posters in general, I styled it after buddy movies specifically.

I started by researching buddy movies specifically from the 1960s. I noticed a few things, like extremely bold colours, a lot of blank space, and this trend in which the two main characters extend the border of an image.

This image is inspired by the poster of 'The Long, the Short, the Cat', 'L'onorata società', and 'Toto, Fabrizi and the Young People Today', which were all buddy movie posters during the time i'm remarking this movie at. I really liked the way Toto, Fabrizi L'onorata società have two characters peek and break the frame of the image above it, and I made it the main image of my poster.

To attempt to hit the same quality as these posters, I lowered the quality of the two images as I could, then put them in front of a bright background with flashy text. The general colour palette, bright hues and the rectangles and font was inspired by 'The Long, the Short, the Cat, who has a bright blue rectangle, and placed a border around the characters in the foreground.
